SUMMER SESSION

Week 3: June 17th - 20th, 2024

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 9:00am-10:30am

This 4 day class designed for artists from Kindergaten to 8th graders.

Who does not LOVE creating funny faces with their drawing!?  Changing the eyes, noses, clothes and hair can yield a new character every time! Not only will students learn to sketch parts of the human face, adding emotion and hilarity, but we will look at many styles of cartooning and animation.  Manga, The Ghibli Anime studios, Looney tunes, Hannah Barbara, or classics like Popeye, Spiderman, and the Flintstones all strike a chord with comic lovers of every age.

We will work in pencil, pen, ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and possibly your tablet! We will also talk about stereotyping. The same tool that we use to create cartoon characters can also be hurtful in our daily life, so it is important to create with care. This class is SO fun, and I am excited to see students' work! Please join us!

This class runs consecutively;  Monday 6/17, Tuesday 6/18, Wednesday 6/19 & Thursday 6/20/2024 from 9:00am -10:30 am.

SUMMER SESSION

WEEK 3: June 17th -20th, 2024

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 11:00am-12:30pm

This 4 day class is designed for students in 4th grade through 12th grade.

Doodling has calmed our souls for decades. The physical results of our daydreams, they covered our notebooks, our math books, and our phone books if you are old enough to remember those!  Doodling is a 'stream of conscious' form of drawing that is hopefully free of decision-making, right and wrong, and time constraints. They just "are".

This class uses that creative process to generate patterns by repeating small ideas. Chain links, knots, mushrooms, or the letter W can multiply into a wave of movement, and color.  Students will also begin to give some artistic structure to these patterns, collecting them in journals for later use, and even naming each one. Imagine carrying your own personal doodle dictionary!

I have had students become so proficient at this invention that they cover shoes, pottery, boxes and even a CAR! Please join us in a studio full with music, meditation, and mindfulness!

This 4 day class runs consecutively: Monday 6/17, Tuesday 6/18, Wednesday 6/19 & Thursday 6/20/24, 11:00am-12:30pm.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday; 9:00am -10:30am.

This class is designed for artists in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Born in Kutzville, Pennsylvania, Keith Haring arrived in New York in 1978 as a scholarship student of the School of Visual Arts. All that once, he began to experience in energetic, multicultural, expressive urban community. Keith was particularly inspired by the beauty and the spontaneity of graffiti that he saw in the subways. Growing up his dad drew cartoons and this greatly inspired Keith to create a visual language or vocabulary that was very personal to him! His entire life he saw a large disconnect between cartooning and the  “real“ art world.“ art is not an elitist activity reserved for the appreciation of a few, but for everyone.” He said.In this class, students will use markers and paint to create visual icons, characters, and language through drawing! We will immerse ourselves in the playfulness and games of creating these wonderful messages!!We will definitely be looking for accomplished artists to work on a mural!

This is class that runs consecutively; Monday 6/24, Tuesday 6/25, Wednesday 6/26 & Thursday 6/27/24 from 9:00am-10:30am.

The Paintings of Joan Miro:(K-5th graders)

SUMMER SESSION

WEEK 4: June 24th-27th, 2024

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday; 11:00am-12:30pm

This 4 day class is designed for Kindergarteners through 5th graders.

The artist Joan Miro once said, " I always have my feet on the ground, and my eyes on the stars.  It represents my flight toward infinity, toward the sky,  while remaining on earth."

Joan Miro was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist.  He was born April 20th, 1893.  Can you believe that he and Pablo Picasso were great friends throughout their lives, and were often inspired by each other?   While Joan began drawing and painting in a fairly representational style, it was abstraction that allowed him to bring his hopeful, child-like visions to life.  In his paintings, simplified forms of birds, stars, galaxies and angels float over a softer dynamic ground.  This often gives the impression of floating through the sky, or underwater.  In this class, students will have the same freedom from traditional horizon lines.

The way that I have chosen to teach this class is to align the aspects of Miro's composition with the parts of the story.  The background is the exposition, the lines are the conflict, the color is the denouement, and revision is our conclusion. Painting is writing for visual artists. We will invent a language of pictures to float through our compositions.

Students will learn the value of making "studies" about their final work. They will investigate the color wheel, warm and cool colors, outlining, positive and negative space, and the use of symbols. Joan Miro truly teaches us to connect our artistic skills to our imagination!

This class runs consecutively; Monday 6/24, Tuesday 6/25, Wednesday 6/26 and Thursday 6/27/24, 11:00am -12:30pm.

SUMMER SESSION

WEEK 4: June 24th-27th, 2024

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 1:00pm-4:00pm

This 3 hour (per day) class runs consecutively, Monday through Thursday and is specifically designed for artists in grades 5th through 12th grade.

In the 1930s, sculptor Alexander Calder invented a new kind of kinetic sculpture called a Mobile. Adding movement to the idea of sculpture opened up all new possibilities. When you think of Calder, think of PLAY! His child-like sense of wonder became his superpower. He built toys for his children, a circus full of performers, and even steel sculptures up to 80 feet high like the bright orange piece called Flamingo  in downtown Chicago. In 1948, inspired by the artist Marcel Duchamp, Alexander created an entire art exhibition that fit inside of a small box. Five sculptures, no larger than 5 inches each, full of color and movement. Each student in this class will create such a box. Working with wood, wire, paint, and metal, artists will create sculptures that fit into a box that will be provided. On the last day of class, each student will present their exhibition, and know how to speak about their journey.

This class gives students studio time after instruction to develop their skills.

This 3 hour (per day) class runs consecutively, Monday 6/24, Tuesday 6/25, Wednesday 6/26 and Thursday 6/27/24 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
